1. List and describe two things you already knew.
Get an establishing shot: This means you get a shot that sets up your story and gives viewers an idea of what it's about.
Find unusual angles: This means that you find angles that aren't just right in front of the subject. Mix it up by using higher angles or go inbetween things to find a more interesting angle.

2. List and describe two things you learned for the first time.
Avoid fast pans and quick zooms: This means you avoid amateur video techniques that distract from the video. It will make it look better if you make steady movements when filming.
Get plenty of natural sound: This means you not only look for good visual B roll but good sounding B roll too. By using natural sound you can enhance the quality of video you provide viewers.

Opening Activity: Steve Jobs

The death of Steve Jobs was very upsetting to me because he died after a long battle with cancer. Steve Jobs was a revolutionary force in technology and owned the world's largest and highest grossing company, Apple. As an owner of more than one of his creations I feel the loss the world is experiencing and appreciate what he brought to us; a new era of music, phones, and computers. He really did invent some of the best inventions of the 21st centrury.

Ruby Bridges

Ruby Bridges was among the first to be integrated into an all white school. She was sent to an all white school during 1960, when the president declared that all school be integrated. Her story is important to tell because it shows integration from the very beginning from the eyes of a child. It's important to show Ruby's faith during her struggle, just to go to school.

Dotson Questions

Rule of three/Filling the silence:
This describes how someone answers a question. The first time they give you the answer they think you want to hear, the second time they explain their answer, and the third time they give you the real answer. This answer is usually prompted by a silence they feel the need to fill with something because they're uncomfortable.
Non question/question:
This is a way of getting people to say things they wouldn't say if prompted by questioning. By simply stating things or talking about your experience you can get people to say interesting things. When you take a break from interrogating them, and make them comfortable, they are more likely to give you good soundbites.

Opening Activity-Target.com customers irked that Missoni orders didnt go through

I remember seeing the commercials for this particular opening on target a few weeks ago. I thought the stuff was cute, but didn't expect it to get this big of a reaction. I thought that targets unpreparadness for this issue was really unacceptable. It didn't seem fair to customers anxiously waiting for their orders to have to constantly check the website and reorder just to get their items. Target should have been more prepared for this new line and not gotten a new internet pay service right before it!

Jonesboro Shootings

A shooting occurred in Jonesboro Arkansas one morning while students filed outside in response to a pulled fire alarm. The perpetrators were 13 year old Mitchell Johnson and 11 year old Andrew Golden. They wanted to get revenge for people that broke up with them or people they didn’t like. For this article I would probably try to see inside the minds of the two boys, figure out more about why they did it.

Disease-spreading mosquito found in San Gabriel Valley

The Asian Tiger Mosquito has taken up residence in Southern California, biting citizens day and night despite some serious swatting. This non native species is especially dangerous because of their ability to transfer fatal diseases such as yellow fever, chikungunya, and heart worm, pest control experts are busily working away to eradicate the pesky mosquitos before they eradicate Californians!

The article was very interesting, and it makes me glad we live in chilly Minnesota. The funniest part, or rather the only funny part, was that these mosquitos were actually brought over here by a shipment of ornamental "lucky bamboo" plants, which turned out a bit unlucky for Southern Californians.

Unusualness
Timeliness
Significance?

Opening Activity-9/11 note: I was absent when we had this assignment!

This article was about a man who previously attended Jefferson High in Bloomington and his 9/11 story. Thomas Burnett was one of the passengers on the 93 flight that sacrificed their lives to save victims of the potential target. And this week and last the students at Bloomington schools are honoring him with fundraisers and stories. He was a star football player, a loving husband, and a zealous individual before he lost his life in the crash. I thought this story was very touching because of its location and story. I always heard about he flight 93 heroes but never thought that individually they had fascinating stories to tell. It was tragic the way he lost his life, but brave. I like the words he said to his wife via phone just before he died "We're going to do something." He really was an inspiring person.

Opening Activity: Mpls. fountains flow, but few drink

The article was really interesting. I liked the idea of the fountains and assumed that people would be using them often because of their convenience. That is, until I heard about the complaints. One of the users who was interviewed stated they had no idea it was even a fountain at first, a simple problem the city should have anticipated. Another said that the water was warm and they wouldn’t drink it even if it was convenient. Another complained of the location of the fountain saying that the placement didn’t make sense for encouraging passerby to drink, and the fountain sat in the sun all day growing warmer. While reading the article I also learned that each of the four “strategically placed” fountains cost roughly 50,000 dollars. This price wouldn’t be worth it to me, and all the complaints just added to my dislike. It seemed poorly planned and not well advertised. They said they didn’t want to suffocate the city with all the little art openings and new things, but I would have been more to look for them if I had heard of them. I also would have been able to differentiate from random decorative sculpture and random drinking fountain.

Video Games: Google plus isn't Fooling Around

Reading this article was a strong indicator of where the new generation of technology is taking us. It seems to be that game companies are using social networks to increase revenue more and more. This burgeoning facebook generation is accustomed to the use of social gaming and introducing new techniques via a new network can only benefit the companies responsible. We tend to find these money thirsty companies that force games upon us as to '"cure our boredom" or expand our online resources are extremely annoying. While facebook is a useful and highly entertaining tool for teenagers, we have other technologies for gaming. We differ on opinions about the success of google plus versus facebook. But, the final verdict is: While gaming is enjoyable and a good way to wile away study hours, we don't need our social and gaming worlds to mix.

Seemingly Drunk Swedish Moose Found Stuck in a Tree

A drunk and confused moose was found entangled in a apple tree this Tuesday in Southwestern Sweden. The animal was discovered by Per Johansson and resident of the home next to the tree, who assumed the animal had eaten one too many fermented apples.  After police and animal rescue arrived the moose was set free by cutting the branches, and continued to rest in Johansson’s garden for several days.

Lindsey Wanberg

Lindsey Wanberg may seem like an intelligent involved high school student, but there’s a lot more to her then that. Lindsey, like most suburban raised children was brought up in a safe, enriching environment. However, mistakes can always happen. At around the age of three Lindsey had her first near death experience. While perched on a pool noodle, Lindsey slid off and immediately sank to the bottom of the deep end. While rescue was not far off and she was fine, Lindsey says she’ll never forget the day she almost drowned.
Lindsey has several creative passions, which perfectly fit her warm, bubbly personality. While she admits she has played flute for four years, she says she’s not very good and her real talent is speech. More specifically storytelling; her ability is extremely recognizable as she told of the drowning incident. It wasn’t a surprise at all to find out she has had success in speech and plans to do it again this year.
As for her future plans, Lindsey wants to travel. Already on her well developed list are the countries Spain, Germany, and her special favorite; the Netherlands, along with several others she talked about. Travel plans for her would center on less frequented destinations such as Africa, China, and India, much unlike the stereotypical central European travelers that are so common in young people like Lindsey. Lindsey Wanberg has a fascinating story to tell, and it’s safe to say she will achieve things with her wide array of talents.
